- Recently, the International Longshore Workers Association (ILA) - a union of 47000 members representing cargo handling workers at major ports along the eastern United States and the Gulf Coast - threatened to strike on January 15th as they seek new "anti automation" protection measures. In early October 2024, 45000 ILA workers went on a three-day strike, resulting in the closure of container loading and unloading and vehicle unloading activities at dozens of ports on the East Coast and Gulf region. Biden administration officials helped facilitate the end of the strike, with both sides agreeing to a 16% pay raise on top of the new six-year master contract and the current contract extension, while resuming negotiations. But the problem was that at that time, the union only agreed to suspend the strike until mid January - which meant that strikes could still occur because, apart from salary issues, another point of contention among workers had not been resolved: the threat of automation.
